Tawnypelt and Applepaw walked out of the camp together, but Tawnypelt noticed that her apprentice seemed distracted. The warrior opened her mouth to ask what was on Applepaw's mind, but before she could turn her thoughts into words, the tiny she-cat was racing after a squirrel. Tawnypelt let out a mrrow of laughter, and started off after her apprentice. When the sun began to set, it's colors of red, orange, and pink fiercely bleeding into the sky, and Applepaw still hadn't returned, Tawnypelt started to worry. Where was her apprentice? She searched throughout the night, but in vain, for she found no sign. There wasn't even a scent trail. Discouraged, she walked back to the camp, and, without a word to anyone else, into her den, and into her dreams.
The next day, around noon, Tawnypelt spotted the missing apprentice walking back into the camp. She stood and walked toward Applepaw. As she approached her though, the she-cat found she didn't even have the strength to scold her. "Where were you?" was all the breath she could manage. Her apprentice ducked her head, ashamed, and mumbled, "The squirrel got away..." She knew the excuse was a feeble attempt at a good explanation, but it was all she could come up with to cover up the truth, that one thing running through her mind like a desperate warning signal. I can't let Tawnypelt know about Birchpaw... but why is seeing a friend such a bad thing? It didn't used to be...

Birchpaw winced as he stared at Brambleclaw. The tabby tom narrowed his green eyes and meowed the question. "Where were you all night?" Birchpaw ducked his head and meowed uncertainly. "Hunting by the ShadowClan border," he meowed. Brambleclaw stared. "Don't tell me you crossed the border and they caught you," he spat. Birchpaw shook his head, glad his mentor gave him a reason for his absence. His mind wasn't working well, all filled with thoughts of Applepaw. "They almost did," he meowed. "But... well, but I had to hide out all night." Brambleclaw shook his head. "All right. Since you came late, you're searching the elders for ticks. Cinderpelt has plenty of mouse bile." Birchpaw grimaced, then realized that this punishment would be nowhere close to what would happed if they found out he was meeting with a she-cat of another Clan. With a heavy sigh, he plodded over to the medicine cat's den.

(I'm gonna join too, k) As Birchpaw walked over to search the elders, a heavy weight fell on his back. He rolled over and batted at his attacker with a sheathed paw, and saw white fur in front of him. "Whitepaw! What are you doing?" "I came to ask if you want to go hunting. Brackenfur's never going to come out of the nursery, and Squirrelflight said she'll come with us since Ashfur's still hurt." Whitepaw looked at him with such an intensity, but Birchpaw was so caught up in Applepaw's friendship, he barely noticed. "I have to search the elders for ticks. I stayed out all night and Brambleclaw caught me and gave me this as punishment. Sorry, maybe another time." Whitepaw looked dissapointed, but she knew Birchpaw couldn' go against the deputy's orders. Just then, a thought popped into her head. "Hey Birchpaw!" she called, "How about I help you? You'll finish faster and then we can go and hunt together." Whitepaw cuffed his ear playfully, and Birchpaw meowed, "Okay." They both ran to Leafpool's den, their pelts brushing lightly.
