Chapter 6
As Lillypaw awoke the following morning, she found a gray tabby she-cat standing over her. “Is something wrong?” she asked the tabby. “You’re the new apprentice, aren’t you? Welcome. I’m Rushpaw, Windrose’s apprentice. I’m training to be the next medicine cat,” she responded softly, “You must be quieter. The rest are still asleep.” “Oh,” said Lillypaw softer than before, and followed Rushpaw out of the den. Rushpaw led her over to the freshkill pile. “You should eat and give yourself a good wash before heading over to Miststar’s den to ask her what you will be doing today,” Rushpaw told her curtly, picked up two mice and headed toward a fern enclosed tunnel. When her tail disappeared from sight, Lillypaw gulped down a thrush and washed herself, just as Rushpaw had instructed her. But before she went over to Miststar’s den, she decided to wake her sibling, Moonpaw.
Lillypaw entered the apprentice den, to find her brothers snoring; and when she prodded them, the snoring only grew worse. So she decided to wake Moonpaw to help her wake Cinnamonpaw and Pepperpaw. “Moonpaw! Moonpaw help me get these lazy furballs up,” she mewed into Moonpaw’s ear, only to get a cuff on her head. “You need to get up Moonpaw,” she meowed louder, “In fact, all three of you lazy furballs need to get up.” With that, she padded out of the den wishing that her siblings took her advice, and over to Miststar’s den.
As she approached Miststar’s den, she heard soft whispering. It’s probably only Miststar and Swiftfoot; after all, they must have to discuss things sometime during the day. she thought calmly. But as she drew closer to the den, she could tell that these voices were not calm, they were hissing at each other. “You are a soft kittypet yourself, Miststar. That’s why have you taken so many rogues in,” she heard Swiftfoot spit. “You challenge me far too often, Swiftfoot. If you have a problem with the rogues, then you can do something about when you are leader,” came Miststar’s stinging reply. Lillypaw crouched in the shadows, so as not to be seen. “Leave my den now, Swiftfoot, and I will forget that we ever had this conversation. However if you bring the subject up again, I will take it as though you wish to be banished from the clan. Now go,” Miststar hissed scornfully as Swiftfoot raced out of the den. Miststar followed him out, but neither of them saw Lillypaw. Or so she thought. Miststar stared after Swiftfoot, but then mewed, “How much did you hear? Yes, Lillypaw, I know you’re there. It’s good that you hid, for, if Swiftfoot saw you, I don’t know what he would say.” “I…I...I didn’t hear that much,” Lillypaw whispered as she crept out of the shadows. “It’s ok, young one, as long as you say nothing about what you just witnessed,” Miststar replied softly. “Ye….Yes Miststar,” she stammered, her eyes wide as moons, “I promise I won’t say anything to anyone.” “Good,” said Miststar soothingly, “Now, let’s gather your siblings and their mentors for a tour of the forest.

Chapter 7
“What is that smell?” asked Moonpaw disdainfully. “That is ShadowClan scent. Horrible, isn’t it?” Miststar replied softly. “All of you,” Rowanpelt meowed to the apprentices, “must learn and remember all three of the other clans’ scents.” With that, Rowanpelt bound of to mark the clan boundaries. Cinderfoot snorted playfully and followed the ginger tom. Dottedtail and Miststar stared after them and muttered together, “Toms!” and, of course, Cinnamonpaw and Pepperpaw ran after them. “It looks like we are going to split up,” Dottedtail said hotly.
Dottedtail padded up to Moonpaw and whispered, “Look! There’s a rabbit.” She flicked her tail in the direction of where a curious smell was coming from. Must be the rabbit thought Lillypaw and decided to remember the scent. Smooth and swift, Dottedtail finished the rabbit off in one motion. When she came back, the rabbit dangling from her jaws, she pleased and in a better mood. “Let’s continue towards the RiverClan boundary. After that we will head over to the narrow WindClan borders and scent mark. Hopefully by then, we will meet up with your brothers again,” Miststar meowed.
As Miststar had speculated, they met up with Lillypaw’s siblings soon after they had passed the RiverClan border. For some reason she felt that Dottedtail was being a bit jumpy. Then again, she, too, was jumpy, because they were so near to an enemy camp. They also met up with a RiverClan cat. Fogmist was his name and he was their medicine cat. Even though Lillypaw knew that medicine cats could never have mates, he seemed to stare at Dottedtail, and she stared back. “Dottedtail hurry up!” Miststar meowed angrily, she had seen the meeting also. “Fogmist is a medicine cat! And he is from another clan. I should banish you for even taking a second look at him,” Miststar hissed furiously. But Dottedtail didn’t seem to take any notice of her leaders sharp words. Instead, she walked quietly along the path until she found Rowanpelt, Cinderfoot, Cinnamonpaw, and Pepperpaw. Certainly her leader wouldn’t blow her cover in front of other cats, since Lillypaw and Moonpaw already knew now. Miststar pulled them aside and told them sternly, “Don’t say a word to any soul. Swear it.” “We promise not to tell any other cat,” Lillypaw and Moonpaw meowed together. “Good. Now go and make sure the elders have plenty of freshkill before taking any for yourselves. And get a good night of sleep, because tomorrow we will be starting your stalking,” Miststar said fondly and licked each of them on their heads’. With the apprentices sent to their duties and Miststar going to her duties, Dottedtail slipped away from camp. She thought no one had noticed her, but, in truth, Spottedmoon, who had been waiting for her to come back from the patrol, noticed her stick her head in and quickly out of the thorn tunnel. And with Spottedmoon hard on her paws, Dottedtail led the way right over to RiverClan camp.

Chapter 8
As Dottedtail came upon the border, she halted for a minute to check the air for any patrol scents. She was lucky, for none were in the air, and she continued on toward a place where not even Spottedmoon could guess. Hard ground soon gave way to marshy reeds and standing pools of water, and though Spottedmoon hadn’t known where she was being led, she could guess as much. She had seen Dottedtail disappear before like this and she was sure that it was for hunting or border patrols but now she knew what really had been going on, though she didn’t know the extent of it. She thought that it was some tom in RiverClan but she never guessed it was the Medicine Cat, and she didn’t find out until Dottedtail told her after Spottedmoon discovered their illicit romance. As Dottedtail slowed to a halt beside the river, she looked anxious, and Spottedmoon could tell by the way her tail twitched that she wasn’t exactly happy to be at this meeting either.
Then out of the misty reeds in the far distance, or it was quite distant to Spottedmoon who was at least 20 tail lengths away from Dottedtail, came a young but wise-looking tom, who was completely gray but for a dab of white on his muzzle. He strode up to Dottedtail trying to seem assured but when he drew close she hissed at him. “How could you reveal this to my leader? She has threatened to kick me out of camp if I continue this. And what about our kits?” she spat at first but her voice grew soft when she spoke of kits. When Fogmist heard of her having their kits, his jaw fell open in shock and surprise. “Ou … Our kits?” he stammered. “Yes. Windrose told me yesterday that I need to move to the nursery. What will happen to us? Surely when I move to the nursery, Miststar will throw me out of camp. She will guess that they are yours,” she mewed painfully. As she rubbed up against him, she whispered, her voice hoarse, “I couldn’t stand it if I would have to stop seeing you. Especially if we were thrown out of our clans.” “Everything will be alright,” Fogmist meowed soothingly. “Nothing will happen. You know that Miststar isn’t like that. She won’t give us away.” Though his words comforted her, she was still optimistic. “I know that she wouldn’t do that, but what if someone else finds out?” “Someone like me?” Spottedmoon mewed from her distant spot then crept forward as soon as she spoke. “What? Did you think you could keep something like this from me forever? I was going to find out sooner or later. It just so happens I found out sooner,” Spottedmoon meowed angrily. “Ho….. How did you find us?” Dottedtail stammered. “It wasn’t that hard to follow your scent trail. Besides, I thought we were friends? I thought if you had something like this that you would tell me. But I guessed wrong,” and with that, Spottedmoon flung herself into the forest, back to camp.

Chapter 9
Hurtling back to camp, Spottedmoon was being trailed by an even faster Dottedtail. Soon Dottedtail overtook Spottedmoon and cornered her in a yarrow bush. “You mustn’t tell anyone.” Spottedmoon hissed furiously at her, “Why? You didn’t even tell your best friend in camp. Why should I keep your secrets for you?” “Because you are my friend. And because I know that you won’t tell anyone,” she answered. Spottedmoon softened. “But that doesn’t guarantee that I wouldn’t tell anyone. Besides, how are you going to explain this to Miststar?” she questioned her with a forlorn glance at Dottedtail’s swelling stomach. “She will have to find out, but she wouldn’t betray me,” Dottedtail replied calmly. “Will you continue to train Moonpaw?” “I will for as long as these kits allow me,” Dottedtail mewed softly, “but I will need your help. I can’t train her to fight, but you can while I give instructions. If worst comes to worst, Miststar will assign a different mentor to Moonpaw.” But at that Dottedtail’s heart sank, along with her tail. “My first apprentice, and I get pregnant.” “Everything will work itself out,” promised Spottedmoon, “but first we need to get back to camp.”
As they crawled out of the bushes, a bird flew over head, making a loud alarm call. But it wasn’t from the cats below it. It had been chirping the entire time it was flying. “What in StarClan is going on?” asked Dottedtail. “That bird came from over near the Twoleg Place. Should we check it out?” came Spottedmoon’s answer from a bush next to Dottedtail. “Probably,” meowed Dottedtail softly, “but we should stay together.” As she and Dottedtail crept out into the quickly gathering dark, they noticed a large shape in the trees a few tail lengths away. “What is that?” Dottedtail mewed a little too loudly. The shape’s head popped up and spoke in an un-catlike manner, “Who be there?” Spottedmoon froze where she was, as did Dottedtail. “Are you part of Chosen?” Dottedtail let a little mew escape her, “What chosen?” The thing chuckled, “You know nothing of Chosen? Well then, you won’t be much help, will you? I am The Wolf of Two.” “Wo… Wolf?! What’s a Wolf?” Spottedmoon meowed helplessly. Once again the thing started to laugh, but this time the thing rolled on his back and splayed his legs out, “Come, I won’t hurt you. I have no reason to. I am what you call a “dog” and I belong to some Twolegs around the corner. Now, what are your names?” said the dog roughly. “Spottedmoon and Dottedtail,” said Spottedmoon shakily, because Dottedtail was frozen in terror. “Good clan names, I suppose, though I don’t really know because I’m not part of a clan. Either way, come forward. I already told you, I won’t hurt you. I can speak cat more clearly than some cats I know,” said the dog again. Slowly Spottedmoon crept out of the shadows from the darkness above, but Dottedtail stayed put. The dog didn’t seem to notice that there were two of them, so there was no need. “Who are the Chosen?” Spottedmoon asked as she approached the dog. This dog is huge. Four times the size of the largest dog I have ever seen Spottedmoon thought as she spoke, “Why do you speak of them?” “Because I sense that you know them closely. A friend or mother perhaps? Do you have any kits?” “I have four: Lillypaw, Moonpaw, Cinnamonpaw, and Pepperpaw. Is that any help?” This time the dog almost fell under a trance. His breathing stilled and his eyes slid shut. “Are you alright?” asked Spottedmoon franticly, but it was no use. The dog was unconscious and there was no rousing him. Spottedmoon even prodded him with a forepaw, but received no response. What in StarClan’s name is going on? thought Spottedmoon. She was about to find out when Dottedtail crept out of the shadows. “Wh…. What is that thing?” she stammered. “It’s a dog.” “But it’s so huge!” she said loudly, which caused the dog to finally wake. “I have spoken with StarClan. We must hurry the time is drawing near. Send your kits to me along with the other apprentices named Snowpaw and Whitepaw,” the dog said quietly. “But Snowkit and Whitekit aren’t apprentices,” cried Spottedmoon. “It is happening as we speak. Miststar called an apprentice naming ceremony. Your mate is Runningstripe, is he not?” “Yes that is him,” replied Spottedmoon evenly. “He is receiving his first apprentice right now. Snowpaw, as it turns out. As I said before, send your kits to me along with Snowpaw and Whitepaw. We shall meet again tomorrow at sunhigh,” and with that the dog sprang up, to the dismay of the cats, and trampled back home. When Spottedmoon and Dottedtail arrived back at camp, they caught the last of the ceremony before everyone was sent to their dens. Spottedmoon curled up beside Runningstripe as he told her what had gone on, with Dottedtail on the other side listening sleepily. All three fell asleep around dawn.

Chapter 10
Lillypaw was stalking a mouse in the forest near the Twoleg place, when a rustling in a bush nearby caused the mouse to panic and scuttle under a nearby tree stump. Great StarClan thought Lillypaw. I’m not going to make any catches at this rate. Lillypaw started to turn to search for another mouse, when a gray tom stepped out of the bushes. “Wh…. Who are you?” stammered Lillypaw. He smelled of ThunderClan, but Lillypaw hadn’t ever seen him before, not even in the elders den. “I am Icefur,” he replied calmly, “I used to belong to ThunderClan, many moons ago. But I have long since joined Starclan.” Lillypaw stood with her jaws agape. This is a StarClan cat! she thought in awe. “Why are you here?” Lillypaw questioned him. “Ah! Now this is what you need to seek. Try asking your mentor. She will help you.” He started to fade away. She asked, “You mean Miststar?” but the question came too late. As he disappeared, he whispered again, “She will help you.”

Lillypaw woke with a start to, once again, find Rushpaw standing over her. It seems to be a habit thought Lillypaw. “Is there something wrong? Badgers attacking? StarClan walking among us?” she asked Rushpaw. “Your mother wants you, your siblings, and Whitepaw and Snowpaw to meet her between the Twoleg place and the RiverClan border at Sunhigh,” Rushpaw answered, “but before then, I was wondering if you and your sister would like to come hunting with me?” Lillypaw looked at her questioningly, “You’re a Medicine Cat. You don’t hunt, do you?” “Occasionally. Windrose asked me to find a good place for chamomile while we are out. Are you coming or not?” she asked as she strolled out of the den. “Yes, and I will get Moonpaw, too. But can I ask Miststar something before we go?” “Yes but hurry up!”

Chapter 11
As Lillypaw padded across the clearing towards Miststar’s den, she wondered how she would explain her dream to her. Who is Icefur? she wondered. But upon approaching Miststar’s den, she heard voices whispering urgently, “She hangs around that tom far too often, Miststar. I just don’t know whether I can trust her much anymore.” It was Windrose’s voice that had spoken. “Calm down, Windrose. He shall soon be a warrior, along with her brother, Ashpaw. We will be able to keep them separate. At Sunhigh tomorrow they shall be made warriors.” Who is this cat? thought Lillypaw. Whoever it is, it must be Rushpaw who they are trying to keep away from “him” because Ashpaw is her brother. Now there is no way to talk to Miststar alone, since Windrose is here, so my dream must wait.
“Miststar!” Lillypaw called. “Come in, Lillypaw.” As Lillypaw entered the den, Windrose looked at her, clearly wondering how much she had heard. “May I go hunting today with Rushpaw and Moonpaw?” she asked politely, pretending she had heard nothing. “Yes, but be sure to catch two mice for me and you, to share later. We need to talk,” Miststar mewed in return, knowing, obviously, that Lillypaw had heard everything. Lillypaw shot her a grateful glance for saying nothing in front of Windrose. “Thank you, Miststar. And I promise that I will catch the best mouse in the forest for you,” Lillypaw replied as she backed out of the den.
Approaching the apprentice den once again, Lillypaw called for Moonpaw, “Moonpaw! Come on! Rushpaw and I are going hunting. If you don’t want to be left behind, then hurry up!” “I’m coming! I’m coming!” replied a sleepy Moonpaw, because she hadn’t woken up when Rushpaw and Lillypaw had, “Just keep your fur on, and let me groom my fur!” “Rushpaw and I will wait for you at the thorn entrance, but you had better hurry!” Lillypaw meowed as she walked away, glad to be rid of camp, and out in the forest hunting.

Chapter 12
Rushpaw sat just outside the entrance to camp, staring out into the forest. How much longer can this go on before Windrose, or some other cat, notices? she thought silently. I can’t keep this relationship quiet much longer. While she was deciding what to do, Lillypaw drew near. “I told Moonpaw to hurry, but I don’t know how fast she will come,” mewed Lillypaw, then continued as she noticed Rushpaw’s uneasiness, “What’s wrong?” Should I tell her? She wouldn’t tell anyone, would she? thought Rushpaw undecidedly. Yes, she won’t tell anyone. I can trust her. “If I tell you something, would you swear to StarClan that you wouldn’t tell anyone? Not you sister, not your brothers, not your mother or father? Not even Miststar?” Lillypaw looked at her, eager to learn such a secret, “Yes! Of course!” “Swear your life to StarClan.” I swear upon my life to StarClan, that I won’t tell a soul,” Lillypaw meowed solemnly, “Not even Miststar.” “Thank you. I have been meaning to tell someone for a long time now, but I hadn’t found the right cat to tell. I think I can trust you though.” She paused unsure of what to say next, “I…. I know that you might think it odd because I am a Medicine Cat apprentice but….” She paused again as an apprentice came through the bushes, though it wasn’t Moonpaw. It was a lean, gray tom with the most beautiful amber eyes. Lillypaw knew this cat, though not well. He had been apprenticed early on when they first came to ThunderClan and she guessed that he should be made a warrior soon. That’s who Windrose and Miststar were talking about! Lillypaw thought in awe. His name was Runningpaw, because he is so quick to respond, not to mention run.
Though Lillypaw couldn’t be sure, she thought she saw a flash of emotion flicker through the Medicine Cat’s eyes. Then her eyes gave way to a rush of the same emotion, and the blue depths seemed to roll like waves in a river. “He…. Hello Runningpaw,” Rushpaw’s voice stammered, which was unusual, for she never faltered, then straightened when she saw Lillypaw’s curious gaze. “Hello Rushpaw,” the tom replied with stiff curtness, but Lillypaw saw that he, too, couldn’t hide his emotions in his eyes, for the amber eyes seemed to still be sap dripping from a tree. Lillypaw felt her ears flush. This isn’t my place, I just happened to be in the wrong place in the wrong time. It seems to be happening a lot lately. But she was still curious, and jabbed the apprentices, because they had both frozen in their places. “Co…. Come on you guys,” then nodding to Runningpaw, “Don’t you need to be back at camp?” Nudging Rushpaw into a nearby bush, she mewed despairingly in her ear, “Is this what you want? To be going against the warrior code? In such secrecy?” Rushpaw hissed back, “You don’t understand, do you? You are allowed to take a mate and have his kits.” “What?! I have never wanted to have kits with any cat in ThunderClan!” “What?” Rushpaw stood looking at her with shock in her eyes. “Never,” repeated Lillypaw. “Ye…. Yes that will all soon change. When you’re least expecting it, love will hit you. I, too, thought I could never fall in love. But in case you haven’t seen, I love Runningpaw,” her voice had dropped to a whisper in the last few words, and mewed even quieter, in a hoarse voice, “and he loves me.” She started to shiver, not out of cold, but out of fear. “What will happen to me?” though her voice was lower than a mouse’s scuttle along the forest floor. “I don’t know,” replied Lillypaw, “but you can be sure that this will change your destiny,” she prophesized.

Chapter 13
Lillypaw lead the way through the forest toward Deepwoods, where there had to be some prey. It was late Greenleaf and all the prey was looking for cool places to hide. Moonpaw kept pace beside her, as she had shown up just a few moments after Lillypaw’s encounter with Runningpaw and Rushpaw. Rushpaw trailed behind them, pretending to search for herbs. She needs chamomile to calm herself down thought Lillypaw. Snowpaw and Whitepaw had gone on a patrol toward the Barn and the ShadowClan border, while Cinnamonpaw and Pepperpaw had been put on elder duties with Runningpaw and Dewpaw, a light calico she-cat with deep blue eyes. She almost looks like a little copy of Spottedmoon Lillypaw thought again. But Cinnamonpaw, Pepperpaw, Snowpaw, and Whitepaw agreed to meet at sunhigh at the Twoleg-Place and the RiverClan border. When Lillypaw thought they had traveled far enough into the forest, they all paused and checked the air. Mouse! Lillypaw started crawling toward the scent, and suddenly, a flash of brown fur caught her eye. A slim tail scuttled in the undergrowth and she saw the mouse pick up a thistle seed and nibble on it. Lillypaw drew herself ever nearer, pounced with accuracy, and stood proudly with her mouse clamped loosely in her jaws. “Good catch!” mewed Moonpaw, but Rushpaw had not seen it. Her tail was dragging as she scented for chamomile. Moonpaw continued, “What’s wrong with her?” “If only I knew,” lied Lillypaw. If only I could tell you what I really knew! What will happen to her? Great StarClan! What will I do?
After Lillypaw had caught two mice and a thrush, Rushpaw had found her chamomile, and Moonpaw had caught a vole and a starling, they headed back to camp. It was nearly sunhigh and they had to cross back into Deepwoods to get to the Twoleg-Place. As they sped through the forest, Lillypaw remembered, with a jolt that nearly stopped her in her tracks, what had happened in her dream. Now when will I tell her? You would think that StarClan would send me a dream at a time when I could tell Miststar about it! Maybe I can tell her when I get back after meeting at the Twoleg-Place….. and her thoughts trailed off after arriving at camp. “Drop your freshkill Moonpaw! We’ll be late if we don’t hurry,” mewed Lillypaw, shifting from one paw to another. She saw Rushpaw slink off to the elders den, and thought No need to ask why she is going there! She will just have Dewpaw fetch bedding so that she can talk with Runningpaw alone, now that Cinnamonpaw and Pepperpaw are half way across the territory! But she had no time to ponder about this, and, along with Moonpaw, raced out of the camp and into the forest toward the RiverClan border.
