Oh, and here's the Prolouge:
P R O L O U G E
The morning sun rose like pale fire over the snow-capped mountain tops, bathing the land in it's golden light and pushing away the dark night sky. A swift autumn wind swept across the mountain face, disloding rocks and sending them tumbling to the empty moor far below. The figures of two cats prowled up these very mountains, golden brown and mottled brown pelts blending in perfectly with the multiple boulders that littered the steep slope. Their ears were flat against their head and they hugged the rocky ground as the wind plucked and pulled at their fur, threatening to send them spiraling into oblivian.
"Are you sure their not following us?" asked the golden brown tabby nervously.
His companion, the mottled brown tabby, rolled his eyes. "Honestly Cougar, you're so paranoid!" he hissed exparatedly. "The Clannies aren't following us!!"
"How do you know?!" the first challenged, though the fear was easily detectable in his slightly trembling voice. "They could be watching us right now, listening to every word we say!! You know how easy it is to hide in these mountains Gaunt!!" his voice was becoming increasingly shrill with fear. "They could be preparing their report for their leader right now!!"
"Please!!" scoffed Gaunt. "Those stupid Clannies couldn't find their way out of thier own dens!!"
"Easy for you to say!! They didn't nearly catch you!!"
"And who's fault was that?"
"Are you accusing me of klumsiness Gaunt?" shrieked Cougar furiously. However, his shriek of anger quickly turned to one of fear as he came down on an unstable ledge, which crumbled beneath his weight and sent him tumbling down the mountainside. His paws scrabbled furiously against the hard rock and the wind plucked at his thin frame, spinning him in all directions. And then, suddenly, it was over. He was alive. Cougar cracked his eyes open every so slightly to see what had caused his sudden stop. He was on a ledge. Still trembling, the golden brown tabby stood shakily to his paws and padded over to the edge of the platform that was currently supporting him. A terrifying view greeted his eyes and Cougar sprang backwards with a hiss of surprise and fear, more than unerved by the sheer cliff that had dropped away beneath his ledge. With a shudder at the fate he had nearly met, Cougar turned his back on the ledge, mentally unsheathing his claws and attempting to dig them in, as if to save himself from the drop behind him. The golden brown tabby surveyed his surroundings, trying to judge how far he had fallen. Within moments, he was met by the sight of Gaunt's slim frame standing a few fox-lengths up the mountainside, that same smirk still etched upon his features. He snorted disgustedly and sheathed and unsheathed his claws against the hard rock, feeling a kind of bitter happiness at their sharpness. With a mutonious glare at his companion, Cougar padded slowly up the mountain side, making sure that everything he stepped on was stable before moving further up.
"Well Cougar." Gaunt finally replied as Cougar reached where he was standing. "What else am I supposed to think with you blundering around the way you are?" Silence from Cougar. "It's such a shame you didn't fall off." he taunted. "You just don't know how to do anything right, do you Cougar?" Still silence. "We would have been much better off without you and I'm sure Blackblood would have been happy. You could have been the next cat to add to his collec-"
But Cougar had finally had enough. With a furious snarl he leaped at his companion, unsheathed claws glinting in the weak morning sunshine.
Gaunt stood there clamly as Cougar flew at him, that same smug expression still written across his face. Then, at the last possible moment he leaped aside onto a nearby boulder and Cougar finally saw why Gaunt had been so calm. Directly in front of the golden brown tabby was one of the many crevices that were sunk into the mountain face. Cougar's snarl of rage quickly turned to a screech of fear as he hit the ground and skidded towards the crevice.
"Help me Gaunt!! Help me!!"
The mottled brown tabby just stood there, smirking. "Goodbye Cougar!!" he called mockingly. "Greet death for me!!" Then, Cougar disappeared over the edge, never to be seen again. Gaunt padded over to the crevice and peered down into it, hoping to get a view of his handiwork. His eyes searched the bottom and he bent over further, looking for his partern's managled body. Finally, he found it, impaled on a rock near the bottom. Gaunt snickered. "What. An. Idiot."
"Well, evidently, you're not to bright yourself, Gaunt, because you'd be down there with him right now if you didn't have some extremely important informations to share with me." drawled a voice lazily behind him.
Gaunt froze.
"You do, have the information, don't you?" spoke the voice again, this time though, holding the faintest hint of a snarl.
"I-I-I believe I have the information. Sir." Yes, Gaunt knew exactly whom he was speaking too. This wasn't just some random cat. Oh no. This was his leader, Blackblood.
"Well then, what are you waiting for?! Face me you worthless piece of vermin!! Tell me everything!!" Blackblood demanded, hissing.
With a gulp, knowing exactly what would happen if his leader wasn't pleased with the information he had gathered, Gaunt turned around very slowly and jerkily to face Blackblood.
The tom was gigantic! With broad shoulders and long, jet black fur. His gray eyes flashed threateningly, and Gaunt could see everyone of his permantly stained blood red teeth.
"Well?" the black tom hissed again. "Speak up vermin or you won't be able to speak at all!!"
The mottled brown tabby shuddered at the thought of what Blackblood would do to him if he didn't speak, but also what the leader would do to him if he didn't like the information Gaunt had for him. He was pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place. "Well...." Gaunt began rather shakily, though his voice grew steadier over time. "Myself and Cougar went down the mountain and spied on those IceClannies just as you had ordered. We stayed at the LoudPath, which is apparently called the 'ThunderPath' in Clannie world, and, as you so wisely predicted," he paused for a moment, to let his leader's enormous ego absorb the flattery he had just so generously offered. Of course, he had done it not for his leader, but for his own gain. Complimenting Blackblood was key in the pack if you wanted to survive more than a few days! "those stupid Clannies never found us, never even bothered to check our cave beneath the LoudPath!! Their secruity is very lax, I've found, they're very easy to spy on...."
"Get on with it Gaunt...." the leader hissed impatiently.
"Right. Sorry. Anyway, Cougar and I watched the Clannies for many days, getting as close as we could to their camp. I discovered actually, that Clan life is not that different from ours. They have a leader, who runs everything, though they are not nearly as wise as you." he paused for a moment to let his praise sink in again. "And they have a deputy, like Freeze, who is second-in-command. They have warriors, queens, and kits. And they have these things called: 'apprentices' which are equivalent to 'Junior Warriors' here. Warriors, when they get an 'apprentice', train them just as we train our 'Junior Warriors'. Really, our ways of life are quite similar. This is a great advantage to you. Since we know their ways of life quite well, seeing as they are almost the same as our own, we will be able to plan our attack much easier!! I'm sure that you, being as intelligent as you are, will be able to think of a plan to crush them!!" Gaunt took a deep breath. "That, my leader, is the intelligence I have gathered for you."
Blackblood sat silently for a few moments, obviously sorting through all the information that had just been thrown at him and Gaunt held his breath, praying that his leader was pleased.
"Very well." mewed Blackblood finally. "You have served me well Gaunt. I must go discuss this with Freeze. You are dismissed."
With a huge sigh of relief, Gaunt turned and began to pad back towards his camp, feeling both lucky to be alive, and pleased at the praise he had recieved. This would put him in much better position for the spot of deputy when Freeze was gone. With a smile at the thought of himself becoming deputy and then leader of the pack, the mottled brown tom sped off in the direction of his home.......
